The second day of the Iberian Historic Endurance started with the teams surprised by a wet Autodromo Internacional do Algarve due to the night rains. The teams and drivers did not have their last race until 12.35pm and they hoped that the track would dry out. Their prayers were answered and the start was given in glorious sunshine and a completely dry track.
The race of the Iberian Historic Endurance weekend was a surprising battle of titans. Pedro Bastos Rezende had the best start and was the first leader of the race. However, Carlos Barbot, who started from the 16th position in the 1st race classification, recovered brilliantly and 9 minutes after the start of the race he was already fighting for the second 2nd place with Pedro Bastos Rezende, passing even the Porsche prepared by Garagem Aurora. Bastos Rezende clenched his teeth and two laps later he passed again the Merlyn Mk4 from Oporto Racing, winning comfortably with Carlos Barbot finishing second and first in the GTP category, with Paulo Rompante second in the Alfa Romeo Ti category.
The chasing group was led by the BMW 2800CS of Domingos Sousa Coutinho / Ricardo Pereira. The Germanic car was leading the H-1971 category with distinction, only behind Porsche and Merlyn, until a mechanical problem put everything at risk. The new leaders of the H-1971 category were Miguel Ferreira/Francisco Carvalho, who started from the 33rd position and made a great recovery to the 3rd place of the race and 1st of the category. The second place of this category was disputed until the penultimate lap with Joaquim Soares, in his beautiful Lotus Elan, beating Antonio Gutierriez, who took his Porsche 2.5 ST to the podium of the category.
Right behind the Escort RS1600, were Carlos Brizido and João Pina Cardoso, thus climbing to the middle place of the podium H-1976. This was completed by the winners of the previous day's race, the Spanish duo Alfredo Martinez and Jesus Fúster, the latter having completed the 50 minutes race alone.
In H-1965, the first two trophies went to two magnificent Shelby Cobras 289s driven by Peter Fischer and Sébastien Demole. Swiss Maximilien Huber took third place with a beautiful Ford Mustang.
In the emblematic Gentleman Drive Spirit(GDS) Category, the duo Luis Gama Rocha/Diogo Gama Rocha took the first place trophy, followed by the Alfa Romeo GTA of the Germans Christian Oldendorff and Volker Hichert. Still on the podium, Luis Sousa Ribeiro took home a well deserved 3rd prize after a great fight with the other Lotus Cortina that only ended with the spinning of the emblematic car prepared at RP Motorsport.
The guest Miguel Lobo with his Cobra Daytona Coupé managed even before the opening of the pit window the 3rd position of the overall however the right rear wheel screwed him and made his stop in the 28th position, not finishing the race.
However before these categories the first prize to be given out was the Index Performance Curvo y Sobriños which had as winner the duo Pedro Moriyon and José Carvalhosa who accumulated 9 points with the impeccable Porsche 356 and received a magnificent and precious watch from the Sponsor. Followed by François Guerin also in a Porsche 356 and finishing the podium in this category the Ford Cortina Lotus from Gama Rocha family.
For Diogo Ferrão, this was "a magnificent weekend of return to competition after a five month break. With an incredible grid, it was an intense weekend with a bit of everything. Beach weather on Saturday, rain on Sunday morning and the track drying out over the last day. Now in one month we will be in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, in Madrid where we are expecting summer temperatures.
The Iberian Historic Endurance will now return to Jarama on the weekend of June 05/06, to continue this magnificent Iberian classics competition.
